How Newsweek Needs to Check the Facts Before Publishing a Special Edition on Global Warming

Global Warming was at one time a fringe issue debated by naturalists, Green Peace advocates, and nameless others out there, mostly because the fact base of the argument was not all that credible. But being who they were, these fringe elements had the wherewithal to accept whatever passed for fact in a blind attempt to seem more informed than the rest of us. However, when mainstream, political magazine Newsweek takes the time and money to put out a limited edition, special issue “100 Places to Remember before they disappear” you have to sit up or look down (at the relevant magazines at the check out line) and listen. After all Newsweek is one of our most revered national magazines, lauded for it’s intellect and opinion forming news. However, this particular “news” issue is tantamount to a fiction publisher’s dream of getting excellent exposure for an up and coming novel.

To sense the importance placed on this issue you have to note that International editor Fareed Zakaria even takes time, out of what must be his important day, to write an editorial promoting the article with the following introduction “What follows is a list – arbitrary, to be sure and far from all inclusive of some of the places that could disappear, or be radically changed if climatologists are right in their predictions of global warming.”

The question here and to you is, should a factual article, limited edition, special issue contain words like could and if? Normally not, but that’s just what it does on every page right next to the riveting photos of these 100 places at risk from the global warming crisis. I don’t know about you, but I would expect a little bit more documentation for the $16.95 plus shipping cost – even if the photos alone could help the average, grade to high school, student save a bundle on the ink they would need to print them at home.

You may ask why is documentation so important when we’ve all been told about global warming; well the reason is that in early April 2010, weeks before the Newsweek ‘Special Issue”, Der Spiegel International published a searing article entitled ‘Climate Catastrophe: A Superstorm for Global Warming Research’ by respected journalists Marco Evers, Olaf Stampf and Gerald Traufetter. That article exposed the Climategate affair, which has affected the entire scientific discipline of Global Warming.

Climategate is the scandal surrounding once revered scientist Phil Jones who was and is the head of the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England. He was the father of the alarming global temperature curve that apparently showed how the Earth was heating up as a result of global warming. His ‘scientific’ research claimed that the average temperature on Earth has risen by 0.166 degrees Celsius per decade between 1975 and 1998. He insisted he was 100% confident of his ‘facts’ but 1,073 private emails between members of his research team (all of whom were leading members of the climate research community) show him more as an activist who viewed his data as his personal shrine which he intended to protect from any critical eye or detractor. This does not sound scientific at all! His days are now shaped by investigative commissions at the university and by the British Parliament. His health has deteriorated and he has stated that he has comtemplated suicide several times.

What’s important for you is that this crisis in confidence has gone all the way to the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). This panel works on behalf of the United Nations. Its ‘evidence’ and the basis for its ‘advice’ is predicated on the work of Phil Jones. The IPCC is supposed to provide advice based on scientific fact. In 2007 it was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with former US Vice President Al Gore. At that time the IPCC Chairman, Rajendra Pachauri, went so far as to declare that awarding the IPCC the Nobel prize was “a clarion call for the protection of the earth as it faces the widespread impacts of climate change.” He even warned that delays addressing global warming would cause greater climate change.

In the almost 3 years that have elapsed since that ‘wake up call’ was uttered, the inaccuracies of it’s research has caused it to experience ‘a dramatic fall from grace’. The mistakes in evidence gathering, sloppy work and exaggerations emanated from the work of the now debunked Phil Jones. So much was going wrong for the IPCC that the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, had to appoint a watchdog in March 2010 – one month before the Newsweek Limited Edition, Special Issue hit the news stands. So, didn’t Newsweek and International Editor Fareed Zakaria know about Climategate and the watchdog appointed to monitor the IPCC? Well, they are a news gathering entity – aren’t they?

But then again they could have been confused, however benignly. But they should have asked who are these luminaries that are authoring the global warming facts? Why didn’t they call IPCC Chairman Pachauri on the carpet about his handling of the affair? He has been obscuring this whole Globalgate mess since its onset. Instead of providing facts like the Chairman of a scientific entity is supposed to do, he has taken to dismissing the questions regarding the all important research as ‘voodoo science’. Well, for the record, he is not a climate change scientists at all, but a railroad engineer by profession and an erotic novel writer by choice. This is important to note as credentials are essential if you are to voice an opinion – aren’t they ?

While climatologists like Hans von Storch call for his ouster, IPCC Chairman Pachauri remains in place. I suppose the politics of second guessing the Nobel Committee awards is just too hot an issue, even for Newsweek.

But Newsweek should not put out a Limited Edition, Special issue on global warming without addressing the controversies surrounding the ‘facts’. Why didn’t they allude to Phil Jones’s troubles or those of the IPCC or talk to Steve McIntyre, the no-name amateur mathematician, who ostensibly shook the climate change data to the core by simply doing the math.

We cannot pay for ‘could’ or ‘would’ or ‘mays’. By backing erroneous evidence that it cannot substantiate with nothing more declarative than ‘could’, ‘would, ‘may’, or ‘if’, Newsweek’s Limited Edition, Special issue on global warming is nothing more than yellow journalism in it’s best and refutable state.

Global Warming is one of the biggest scams in history!

  2. Great Article. Excellent observations. I saw Inconvenient Truth in order to keep myself informed. Save yourself the time by Imagining Al Gore droning on for nearly two solid hours. The ‘hockey stick’ effect applied to the graph is so extreme not even he believed it. It was written all over his face as he pointed, intoned and frowned.

  3. Mhamed Kabal says:

I cannot believe the liberal media has been ridding on a trojan horse for the past decade, vouching on all those so called facts that no credible science scholars could prove for the life of them.

The “Der Spiegel” analysis is a rare gem on the world wide web, but truly indispensable to all G.W skeptics.

THank you for enlightening me on that matter.

  4. Newsweek is not news. It is one of many media companies (MSNBC, NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, NY Times, ect..) used by thr Liberal Socialist such as Dictator Obama and his regime to spread Socialist and Communist propeganda.

Al Gore is worried about the oceans rising, he just bought an 8 Million dollar mansion on the beach.
